Method
- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Step 2: Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined and smooth.
- Step 4: Add the cubed French bread to the custard mixture and gently fold to combine. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes.
- Step 5: Melt unsalted butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. If using pecans, stir in chopped pecans once the butter is melted. Cook for about 3-5 minutes until bubbly and caramelized.
- Step 6: Pour the caramelized pecan mixture over the soaked bread and custard mixture in the baking dish. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and set.
- Step 7: Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Drizzle with maple syrup just before serving.
Notes
This casserole can be assembled the night before and stored in the refrigerator. It pairs well with fresh fruit, whipped cream, or a drizzle of maple syrup.
