Ingredients

For the French Toast Bake
  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Streusel Topping
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch Baking Dish
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula or Wooden Spoon
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Knife for cutting bread

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, and salt until well combined.
  3. Step 3: Add the cubed bread to the egg mixture and gently stir to combine. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the liquid.
  4. Step 4: Prepare the streusel topping by combining flour, brown sugar, melted butter, ground cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using) in a separate bowl until crumbly.
  5. Step 5: Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the streusel topping over the top.
  6. Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  7. Step 7: Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving warm, drizzled with additional maple syrup if desired.
