Method
- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, and salt until well combined.
- Step 3: Add the cubed bread to the egg mixture and gently stir to combine. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the liquid.
- Step 4: Prepare the streusel topping by combining flour, brown sugar, melted butter, ground cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using) in a separate bowl until crumbly.
- Step 5: Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the streusel topping over the top.
- Step 6: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Step 7: Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving warm, drizzled with additional maple syrup if desired.
Notes
Make it vegan by substituting eggs with a flaxseed mixture and using plant-based milk and cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
