Ingredients

For the Potatoes au Gratin
  • 2 lb russet potatoes sliced thinly
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter for sautéing garlic
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper optional
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs optional for topping

Equipment

  • Sharp Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • 9x13-inch Baking Dish
  • Aluminum foil
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Step 2: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about a minute until fragrant.
  3. Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, milk, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Stir in sautéed garlic and half the cheddar cheese.
  4. Step 4: In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half the sliced potatoes. Pour half the cheese sauce over them. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  5. Step 5: Sprinkle remaining cheddar and Parmesan cheese on top. Optionally, add breadcrumbs for a crispy topping.
  6. Step 6: Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  7. Step 7: Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a lighter version, consider using low-fat milk and cheese alternatives. You can also add more vegetables or herbs to enhance flavor.
